The other day I needed to print a digital photo for one of my kids for a school project. I immediately thought, no problem, I’ll print out the photo on 8″x 11″ paper using my inkjet printer… But my daughter wanted an old school glossy photo, the type you’d get from the CVS printer station.
I only needed one and I didn’t want to pay CVS to do it… Luckily my wife had some old 3″x6″ photo paper for a printer. However, I wasn’t sure how to actually use the special paper to print the photo using my Epson WorkForce WF-3640 printer so that it comes out looking like a glossy photo. I looked online for instructions, but there was nothing that helped.
I figured it out and my daughter was happy with the result. Here are step by step instructions for how to print a digital photo on 3×6 photo paper using an Epson WorkForce WF-3640 inkjet printer which I found at Costco, but can be bought on Amazon, etc. In this example I’m using the Apple Photos app which is included with a Mac, however, it would be about the same process for another digital photo using the same printer.
Step by Step Instructions for Printing 3×6 Digital Photos on an Epson WorkForce WF-360 Printer
Step 1: Remove the printer paper cassette tray that can be adjusted to hold 3×6 photo paper. With this particular model of printer, there are two trays. Tray 1 can hold any size paper, such as 8.5″ x 11″, and may be adjusted for different paper sizes… Tray 2 can only hold 8.5″ x 11″ paper. The photo below is of Tray 1 with 8.5″ x 11″ paper before swapping it out for the photo paper.
Step 2: Remove the 8.5″ x 11″ paper, or whatever you have in there, from the tray. You will then adjust the paper guards to fit the 3″ x 6″ glossy photo paper, as per the red arrows below.
Step 2: Close-up: Each of the red arrows point to the adjustable guides on the printer tray where the 3×6 paper will fit.
Step 3: Add the 3″ x 6″ photo paper. With this particular printer, the glossy side should be inserted in the cassette face down.
Step 3: Aerial view. Once the photo paper is added, put the tray back in the printer.
Step 4: From the touchscreen, choose Cassette 1 and select 4x6in paper for the paper size and choose “Ultra Glossy” for the paper type. Hit “OK”.
Step 5: Find the photo on your computer that you want to print. In this example it’s a photo of young Theodore Roosevelt.
Step 6: On a Mac, in the top right hand corner of your desktop, from the Photos app, choose File > Print…
Step 7: Choose the printer and settings you want for the 3×6 photo.
Step 8: Print!
