Einstein is well known for his theory of relativity… But maybe more practical for the common man is his theory of happiness.
“A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness”
Einstein wrote this note in November of 1922 in lieu of a tip for a Japanese bellboy. It was written (originally in German) in black ink on a piece of hotel stationery from the Imperial Hotel of Tokyo.
Einstein’s Theory of Happiness note, along with a shorter one that reads “Where there’s a will, there’s a way” , fetched $1.56 million and $250,000, respectively, at an auction in Israel earlier this week.
