Igrarianism

What is Igrarianism?

While many Americans still hope to retire someday, the nonprofit Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) estimates that the U.S. retirement savings shortfall is currently over $4 trillion.

This means that for most of us, our savings will simply not be enough to live on.

While this is an economic reality… There is also an emotional and psychological reality.

Research indicates that our self-esteem peaks in middle age and then falls later at retirement age.

Why would self-esteem fall when we retire…?

As noted above by the EBRI, most people are not able to support themselves in retirement… As such, they will experience a major disconnect between expectations and reality.

Even if we want to keep working past retirement age, there is no guaranty we will be able to find a job.

But retirement does not have to be synonymous with losing meaning in our lives…

Not if we plan ahead.

Igrarianism is a philosophy of using Internet technology and daily blogging to build a foundation from which to create incremental streams of passive income.

Planning for the Long Tail Retirement

Life expectancy has been increasing over time. According to this calculator by the Social Security Administration, if you make it to 65 you can expect to live about another 20 years.

Can you support yourself for 20 years with no additional income?

Starting a blog can help ameliorate the economic and psychological challenges of retirement mentioned above.

Indeed, disciplined daily blogging can help build self esteem and provide a valuable creative outlet for you…

What will you write about? The principle of the “long tail” in online search means your blog can be about anything and you are likely to find an audience.

And While there is no guarantee that you will make money, Kevin Kelly’s concept of “One Thousand True Fans” suggests that it is possible to earn a living online.

There are many platforms on which you can build a blog.

This blog is built on a platform called WordPress. Creating a blog using WordPress is easy and one of the benefits of using WordPress is that you will not be bored.

Although WordPress is a non-technical platform, you can learn valuable technical skills if you want.

These skills can be built upon incrementally and can be learned by almost anyone at any age.

By developing a habit of disciplined, daily blogging you can build a foundation from which new income streams can be established.

The sooner you start blogging, the sooner you are paving the way for a healthier retirement.

Just as agrarianism values rural society over urban society, Igrarianism values independence in the digital age.

Incorporating Igrarianism into your long term financial planning can supplement a conventional “retirement” while building useful technical skills and, potentially, multiple streams of income.
